Even if you’re a Christian apologist, how can you not cringe at Dinesh D’Souza’s howler: “If you think Bin Laden is bad, in his wildest imagination he couldn’t begin to match the crimes of atheism that have occurred within our lifetime. It is atheism, not religion, which is responsible for the mass murders of history.” But when was the last time you saw atheists doing this?
Of course, D’Souza confuses cults of personality (Pol Pot, Stalin, Hitler) with atheism, even though they have far more in common with religion.
The Israeli’s and Palestinians aren’t fighting on religious grounds? I call bullshit. The very fact that they are identifying themselves as being Israeli’s and Palestinians should tell him that he’s wrong.
The Spanish Inquisition, while being the most notorious, is NOT the Inquisition. The Albigensian Crusade which started it all killed as many as 1,000,000 over 20 years in the early 13th century! Not an easy feat considering the technology of the time, and not one peep about it from D’Souza’s intellectually-dishonest mouth.
And I am not a communist. Bite me, D’Stupid. If nothing else, he’s a good spin doctor. But he’s full of crap and he knows it.
Atheism may well be spurred on by the refusal of religions to engage in self-criticism. I’ve just read http://deligentia.wordpress.com/2009/11/24/263/ on how foreign self-criticism is to religion, and, moreover, how religion misunderstands itself. You might be interested in it.
